The Devil & Daisy Dirt is a spellbinding alt‑folk, Garden‑State gothic experience that reimagines the iconic legend of the Jersey Devil through a bluegrass‑infused one‑hour performance. Set in the eerie Pine Barrens and backed by haunting folk‑country songs from Arlan Feiles, the show follows Daisy Dirt, a hardworking diner waitress who discovers a wounded, winged creature—part mythic, part gentle cryptid—languishing in a dumpster behind "Devil’s Diner." With the help of tarot‑reading Effie and a mysterious talisman of “muscle meat,” Daisy must outwit a sinister poacher named Tasty and guide the creature to a magical portal atop Apple Pie Hill, opened only by a midnight lightning strike.
Created by Rutgers professor Alex Dawson, who also narrates the tale, this immersive production features an eight‑foot wearable Jersey Devil puppet crafted by Dan Diana, live bluegrass music, and a cast led by Jackie Fogel as Daisy. Critics have praised it as “Jim Henson meets Johnny Cash,” highlighting its emotional depth, inventive staging, and genre‑blending. Equal parts creature‑feature spectacle and heartwarming folk ballad, the show masterfully explores themes of acceptance, belonging, and the humanity behind myth—earning standing‑room performances across NJ and NY since its 2024.
